NEWCO LAUNCHES DAILY EDITORIAL NEWSLETTER, EXPANDS MEDIA MANAGEMENT TEAM
NewCo Launches Its First Media Product, The NewCo Daily and Hires GM for Media
San Francisco – October 19, 2015 – NewCo today announced the launch of its first media product, The NewCo Daily, a daily email newsletter that highlights innovative business practices from sources around the globe. This announcement comes the week after NewCo’s most successful festival to date, which welcomed 3,000 participants inside the offices of 220+ inspiring SF and Oakland based organizations.
“With the NewCo Daily, it’s our goal to continue the conversation begun by NewCo’s events. Our mission is to identify and celebrate new kinds of companies – big and small – that create positive change in how they work, what they create in the world, and who they are as citizens of their community,” said NewCo founder John Battelle.
NewCo Festivals are different from traditional conferences. NewCo festival participants get in to the headquarters of companies they care about most. While inside, attendees learn about how each organization drives positive, transformative change directly from founders, through engaging conversations and hands-on demonstrations.
The NewCo Daily continues the immersive narrative begun by NewCo Festivals. Featuring companies, trends, and issues important to business and culture, the NewCo Daily covers the impact companies around the world are having locally, nationally, and globally, and provides business leaders across all sectors with key insights and metrics. In addition to articles, each publication features one editorially-driven company Profile, providing a unique NewCo take on a company, listing key personnel, investors, and financing milestones.
NewCo has hired Hayley Nelson, a twenty-year media industry veteran, as general manager of its media business. Nelson joins NewCo after running product development for several years at WIRED, where she was responsible for a comprehensive redesign of WIRED.com and the development of new editorial tools and revenue products. Nelson previously held product and business development roles at The New York Times and Associated Press. Working with NewCo Chief Revenue Officer and Publisher Kate Byrne, Nelson will oversee the build out of NewCo’s media business, which will expand its portfolio to include podcasts, video, and long-form reporting. “Hayley brings a wealth of cross-platform media experience to the team,” said Battelle. “Business is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Our post-WWII consumption-based model of capitalism is morphing into a more thoughtful, efficient, and sustainable model. We’re renegotiating our social contract with work and the impact of business on our society and our environment. New kinds of companies are leading the charge, and NewCo will chronicle the issues, trends, and people driving this change.”
“I’m excited to come on board at such an important time in NewCo’s formation,” says Hayley Nelson. “NewCo has a great foundational team, and I’m looking forward to building upon that. Together we are going to grow an engaging, thought-provoking series of media products.”
NewCo is building a stable of editorial talent in San Francisco and across the country that will report and comment on the NewCo movement. Already on board are Jimmy Guterman, from Harvard Business Review and MIT Sloan Management Review, Lon Koontz, from the NY Daily News; and Khari Johnson, from Patch and Through the Cracks. “We plan to expand the team with the hire of a San Francisco-based editor in chief in the months to come,” says CEO John Battelle. “This solid team is a great start to a great product.”
About NewCo
Launched as a passion project in 2012 by Wired co-founder John Battelle, NewCo has evolved into a VC-backed startup that celebrates “businesses on a mission” through festivals, media and services. Its mission is to identify, celebrate, and connect the engines of positive change in our society.
NewCo’s first product, the NewCo Festival, turns stodgy conferences into experiential field trips, giving attendees access inside the offices of a host city’s most innovative companies. There are now 18 NewCo festivals in cities across the U.S., Latin America, and Europe, involving more than 1,000 companies and 20,000 participants.
