Most of the world’s population, 4.2 billion people, remains offline.

As that changes, plenty else will, too. Governments will fall; others will improve; industries will disappear; new ones will emerge. If you believe the power and value of the Internet multiplies as more people gain access, this is great news, but overall growth in the percentage of people with Net access is slowing. Half of the world’s population still can’t afford fixed broadband and rising costs for telecom companies means universal access may never be commercially viable, according to a new UN report.

To reach everyone in the world, the group behind the Outernet project and companies like Facebook and Google will beam internet access from the sky with satellites, planes, and balloons. That’s important for economy and interconnectedness but, more important, the UN and many countries now consider internet access a human right.

If companies and countries truly believe that, how far will they go to make it happen – and then defend everyone’s right to access?
